Centerville, MA, December 27, 2006 - The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod will present a multi-generational art exhibit, When We Were Younger, at the Cotuit Center for the Arts from January 6 to January 28, 2007. As every adult with a refrigerator covered with children’s art knows, there is magic in children’s minds. When We Were Younger pairs the recent work of established, well-known Cape Cod artists alongside pieces that they created when they were younger. This unique free exhibit will introduce children to the work of 45 established artists from Cape Cod and will encourage children’s artistic aspirations.

The exhibit will foster the dreams of its younger audience, while delighting the adults who collect and admire these established artists. Keeping younger arts patrons in mind, art work will be displayed at a height of 4 feet throughout the exhibit -- right at children’s eye level. In addition, a mini-art library will be made available to visitors, and a series of child-friendly events will be scheduled over the course of the month.

This exhibit is presented thanks to the generous support of College PayWay. “We are honored to join with the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod to present this exceptional and engaging exhibit for the enjoyment of Cape students and families,” stated Stephen Galvin, CEO and founder of College PayWay. “The arts are an integral part of the education process and an essential element of every child’s complete education.”

Participating artists are excited to share their early efforts alongside more contemporary work, and to place both pieces within the context of their own personal growth and development as artists. Participating artist Liz Mumford said, “I had such an enjoyable time getting reacquainted with my work as a child. Congratulations to the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod for organizing this completely original exhibit and drawing attention to the importance of arts education and creative expression for children.”

“We’ve all heard the statistics about how important arts education is for our children,” said Margaret Van Sciver, Arts Foundation board president. “We know that students that have high levels of arts participation outperform other students on virtually every measure. The Arts Foundation truly believes that all children deserve access to high quality arts education programs. The experiences we have in childhood provide the framework for our lives.”

When We Were Younger will introduce Cape Children to the work of established artists from their own communities. These artists are thrilled to be sharing work they created when they were children, and they hope by doing so to encourage aspiring young artists to pursue their own emerging artistic interests. “Every artist evolves from a different confluence of events,” participating artist Ellen LeBow said. “You blend a way of perceiving with encouragement and lots of raw materials and an artist can emerge”.

The Arts Foundation has sent invitations to local schools to bring their students to the Cotuit Center for the Arts to view the exhibition during the month of January. School groups will be provided with a guided tour of the exhibit and the chance to visit the newly created mini-art library. Hands-on creative workshops can be arranged for students prior to their visit. Children can create their own works of art and become part of the exhibition.

And yes, the exhibit will feature a refrigerator where newly created children’s art work will be displayed.
